Fashion influencer; The museum

Since the Asian Civilisations Museum’s (ACM) pivotal shift in 2020 to spotlight #InnovationInTradition, the museum has used fashion and dress as media to deliver their message. #SGFASHIONNOW marks the museum’s first showcase of contemporary Singapore fashion. It was an unprecedented joint collaboration between the local fashion community, the Textile and Fashion Federation of Singapore, and educational institution LASALLE College of the Arts. This research explores the influence of the museum on local fashion ecology through the case study of the collaborative exhibition, conducting content analysis on existing paratext and interviews with personnel involved in the exhibition. The conceptual framework of ‘new museology’ is used to understand how the museum may be a developmental platform for the local fashion community. Overall, this research provides insights towards the educational, professional and institutional components of the joint collaboration opportunities that fashion provides within the museum.
