Are we there yet? On the continuous search for a Singapore sound

This research examines the perceptions and responses of key players in the music industry to the Singapore sound and identity. These key players include government institutions, music platforms and media companies, as well as local musicians. The findings of this research are intended to be a starting point for further research on the meaning of the Singapore identity and sound. This study also attempts to investigate whether the Singapore sound exists. If so, this study hopes to provide a better understanding on how we can get there and how different players in the music industry can work together to shape the Singapore sound, by presenting different perspectives. This study also documents and discusses the ways in which each key player supports and promotes local music.

Chew Ying Ying

Chew Ying Ying

Ying Ying is an aspiring arts manager with a keen interest in the performing arts, particularly music. She discovered her passion for music in secondary school where she was an active member of her school's Guzheng Ensemble and later went on to be a member of her Polytechnic's Chinese Orchestra. Ying Ying was also part of the organising team for ARTWALK Little India (2021) during her studies at LASALLE College of the Arts. Internships with the Singapore International Festival of Arts 2019 and Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre further developed her skills in marketing and education outreach. Through her work, she hopes to contribute to supporting artists by presenting their works to the best possible audience.
