Exploring environmentally sustainable practices in theatre
This research explores the impact of theatre-making on the environment, as well as the opportunities presented and challenges faced in adopting greener theatre-making practices in Singapore, through an autoethnographic study. Theatre has often been used as a vehicle to shed light on environmental issues such as global warming and climate change. However, this does not necessarily mean production teams apply any environmentally sustainable practices in keeping with these messages. One of the gaps in environmentally sustainable theatre-making in Singapore is a lack of awareness on available methods and the importance of collective effort in addressing environmental issues through action instead of words. This study analyses the opportunities presented and challenges posed by efforts to be more environmentally sustainable in theatre-making within the context of Singapore. It also seeks to better understand the environmental impact of theatre-making in Singapore and explore how theatre-makers in Singapore can adopt environmentally sustainable practices in their theatre productions.
