No society can exist without myths – they give form to thoughts and give rise to actions. They are what hold a country, a community, a culture together. But a person has competing allegiances, and conflicting myths can overlap in complex and often mysterious ways. This thesis is a collection of three short stories set in Singapore, which aims to explore some universal myths: of romance, national identity, and the roles of mothers and daughters. Through the lens of fiction, these stories aim to shine a spotlight on the nature of these myths – assumptions many hold to be true, but upon closer inspection, stand on shaky ground.
