The Cost of a Dream is a memoir which examines the intersection of culture, the expectations of Subh’s Indian middle-class family and the cost of following his dream of writing and releasing a music album.
Growing up in rural India, living with a scarcity of money, his parents wanted him to study well and become an engineer or doctor. No other profession was on their list. In Indian society, writing is a hobby, and only bad students who can’t become a doctor, an engineer or a lawyer choose writing as a profession.
The chapters in this thesis explore Subh’s desire to follow his passion for writing, the struggles and triumphs of his childhood, and the expectation of his parents.
